Assam Is Drowning. And Most of India Is Still Scrolling.
As of today, August 5, 2026, the Assam flood crisis has worsened again. Overnight rains have raised fears of new flooding. The death toll has reached 89. Over 1,22,000 people across five districts are affected right now, today, at this moment.
Over 900 villages are submerged. Roughly 7 lakh people have been displaced. Nearly 3 lakh are living in relief camps with nothing but the clothes they managed to carry out. Over 21,500 hectares of crops have been destroyed. Livestock gone. Homes gone. The agricultural land that entire families depend on for survival is underwater.
These are not just numbers. Behind every digit is a family that woke up one morning to water at their door, then at their waist, then over everything they owned. A farmer who spent a lifetime building something, watching it disappear in hours. A mother carrying her child above the waterline and not knowing where she is walking to. This is what 89 deaths and 7 lakh displaced actually look like when you are standing in it.
What Our Volunteer Saw on the Ground
Palash, our Mitaan Foundation volunteer, has been in Assam for 15 days. He has seen what the news cameras leave out. The families who did not make it to relief camps. The children with no clean water. The elderly who cannot be moved.
He went once and came back. Then he went again. Because the food crisis has now become a sanitation crisis, and the sanitation crisis will become a disease crisis. That is when people start dying from things that had nothing to do with the flood.
When Palash arrived the first time, people needed food. When he came back, they needed sanitation supplies. The next time he goes, they will need medicine. Each visit costs money. Each visit reaches people that government relief has not. Each visit is only possible because people like you decided that a stranger's crisis was worth something.
