The air was filled with drums, colors, and devotion. It was Ganesh Visarjan, a day meant for celebration. But for 29-year-old Durgesh, it became a day he’ll never forget. As he joined the procession with his friends, his foot slipped near a power pole.In that split second, a live wire carrying 11,000 volts snapped loose — and fell straight on him. The sound of the electric shock silenced the celebration. By the time people reached him, Durgesh was lying motionless his legs burned, his skin charred, his body in shock.
Durgesh was rushed to Bhavya Veda Medical Centre, Kanpur, where doctors found severe electrical burns on both legs and sepsis shock.
He’s now in the ICU on ventilator support, fighting for his life. His body is weak. His burns are deep. His recovery will take at least 45 days of intensive care, wound cleaning, and multiple procedures. The estimated cost of his treatment: ₹11,98,700.For someone like Durgesh a daily wage worker from a small village it’s an unimaginable amount.
Durgesh lived in the city with his younger brother, trying to earn enough to support their family back home.
Now, that same brother spends his days and nights in the hospital running for medicines, paying borrowed bills, and praying that his brother opens his eyes again. Their parents live miles away in their village. They cry every day, wanting to see their son but they can’t afford even the travel fare to reach him. Every call from the hospital fills them with dread. Every silence feels like goodbye. The family has already borrowed money just to keep Durgesh admitted. But soon, they won’t be able to afford even the ward fee. And if the treatment stops, Durgesh might not survive.
