For thirty years, Human Topse has lived with a condition that has taken away everything a person deserves. Since the day he was born, cysts began to appear on his skin. Over time they spread across his face, his head, his back, his arms, and his entire body. Every year the cysts grew larger. Some have become so big that they hang from his skin. His bones and muscles have started weakening. His body hurts even when he sits or lies down.
He is not just fighting a disease. He is fighting society’s fear and rejection.
Human has never stepped outside his village. People get scared when they look at him. Children run away. Adults keep their distance. No one gives him work. He has never earned a single day’s wage because no one is ready to hire him. He wants to live with dignity.
But he cannot even walk into a market without people staring in fear.
Human’s mother passed away. His father is old and weak. He tries his best to take care of his son, but even arranging a simple meal has become difficult. There are days when they eat only once. Some days even that is not possible. Human has never visited a doctor because they cannot afford even the bus fare to reach a hospital. They survive only because neighbours sometimes share leftover food.
They are not living. They are trying to survive one day at a time.
The cysts on Human’s face have grown to a point where they cover his eye and distort his vision. The lumps on his head and back are increasing in size. His skin tears easily. Infections are spreading. The pain is constant. He hides inside his home because he does not want his father to worry more.
Doctors have now diagnosed him with Neurofibromatosis.
Without treatment the condition will continue to worsen.
Doctors have recommended a long treatment plan. It requires several months of medical care, immunotherapy, surgery, skin care management, and treatment of secondary infections. The total cost is far beyond anything Human or his father can imagine.
For a family that struggles to afford one meal, medical treatment is an impossible dream.
